#WRTalk About Your Job - Vision Photography (@visionpho)

Award winning art photographer, Laura Cook of Vision Photography, provides everything from portraits to fine art from her studio in Kitchener. She has over 10 years of photography experience, and has been exhibiting since 2004 in Waterloo Region, Brantford, Oakville, Toronto, and New York City. She also accepts commissions and can be booked for weddings, and events.

Her artistic vision consists of investing herself in the subject, with full exploration to tell the story. "My goal is to evoke an emotional response from the viewer.  I am committed to professional development, and investing in continuous learning. With my reliable reputation of professionalism and my unique vision, I have worked with several homeowners, organizations, and businesses creating quality custom collections, to satisfy their unique image needs," said Cook.

Her passion of photography was birthed in 2008, but she also holds a Digital Media Certificate, and has over 10 years of experience in graphics. Previous to her artistic endeavors, she spent more than seven years in Management.

Cook says the best part of what she does is making valuable and meaningful contributions to the lives of others through the creation of her artistic imagery.

Q&A

What made you want to start your own business?

My passion for photography and wanting to make a meaningful contribution in the lives of others through beautiful imagery; whether it be photographic art or portrait art for their home or office décor.

Besides your work, what do you enjoy doing?

Hitting the gym – I enjoy weight lifting and Zumba. Shopping for all things pretty – antiques & vintage – props, accessories, clothing for photography purposes of course! Family outings discovering new places or visit familiar favourites. Singing in my car (alone), visiting the greenhouse (due to my lack of a green thumb), aquarium store, petting farm, gem store, and hiking the trails.

What sets you apart from your competitors?

I bring out the best in my subjects by providing a comfortable, relaxed environment, and giving even the most camera shy person a fun and enjoyable experience that produces classic, timeless, quality images. From the initial consultation, right up until the in-home ordering session, I guide the client, supporting & encouraging them through the whole process. I offer my clients a wide selection of beautiful art for their homes and offices along with gift items. I am committed to quality and pay very close attention to detail.

What does your typical day look like?

My day starts with coffee & snuggles with Mister Nanu (my beloved fur baby). Most days are spent with administrative duties – emails, systems, consultations, planning, reflecting, editing, conceptualizing, designing, meetings, coordinating, shoot preparations, networking (especially #WRTalk Wednesday evenings), professional development – workshops, tutorials, seminars. I make it a point to break up my day with some physical activity at the gym.

What do you wish you knew (but didn’t) when you started your business?

The life of a professional photographer consists of much more than photography. Access to a business mentor to guide me through processes and provide support along the journey would have been awesome.

What advice do you have for other entrepreneurs in Waterloo Region?

Take the time to organize, plan, set goals, and create operational systems and monitor them. It will be well worth the investment of time.

Until February 29, 2016, all #WRTalk members will receive 10% off business headshot sessions! A list of other upcoming promotions can be found here
