Catherine Mesly is the mind behind The Creative Details, a wedding and event planning company located in Kitchener-Waterloo. Now going into her third wedding season, Catherine and her team take pride in helping make events come to life. “We are curators of celebrations that bring people together and love the details that go into making every guest feel special. We specialize in intimate events, simple beauty, and creating extraordinary experiences. We take care of all the details so you can enjoy time with friends and family,” says Catherine.

Being an event and wedding planner was something Catherine knew she loved and wanted to spend her career doing, so starting her own business seemed like the next logical step. “I know what I love to do and I truly enjoy the challenge. It helps me grow as a business person and as an individual; I have the opportunity to work in all roles and learn much faster.” she said. Working in a variety of roles means Catherine not only knows the wedding industry like the back of her hand, but also gets to meet and work with all sorts of clients, and execute a variety of events. Catherine cites the best part of her job as “working with amazing clients, their friends and family, and so many talented vendors. I am constantly inspired!”

While her days are spent managing The Creative Details which includes research, responding to emails, and designing events, Catherine spends her time off hosting friends and family in her home, as well as travelling, being outdoors, and volunteering with event planning for our very own #WRTalk events!

Catherine is currently planning an industry networking event in the Spring - stay tuned wedding vendors! She also created The Little Bride Book last year, which includes a promotional offer for The Creative Details services, as well as many other local businesses (valid until December 2016).


What sets you apart from your competitors? 

My business is about planning personalized celebrations. I focus on the fact that the events are about the client and they should be represented through every detail. On event days, it’s all about the guest experience, your guests are my guests and I will do (just about) anything to make sure it’s enjoyable for all. (Real story: I have carried someone’s baby while coordinating dinner service so the parents can enjoy the meal - I am on it!)

What is your background/experience/education?

I have a Psychology degree from Laurier. It’s actually been really helpful in understanding people and being aware of behaviours. I am also certified by the Wedding Planner’s Institute of Canada.

What do you wish you knew (but didn’t) when you started your business? 

The importance of creating a business plan right away. It can always be tweaked as you move forward and grow.

What advice do you have for other entrepreneurs in Waterloo Region? 

Create a business plan! Even if it’s s a simple one. Building this foundation will help focus your energy and attract the type of clients you want.
