Beyond The Stage Homes (BTSH) was established by Shauna Lynn Simon in May of 2008, and incorporated as Style Corporation in September 2015. BTSH now operates as a division of Style Corp. They also introduced the Styled, Listed, and Sold Academy in September of 2015 as well, which offers the latest in Home Stager Training.

BTSH provides home staging, decorating, and residential design services. "Many people are familiar with home staging thanks to popular reality TV shows, but basically, we help home owners prepare their home for sale by helping to clearly define the space, show proper scale of the rooms and spaces within the home, and to create an emotional connection for buyers. This is achieved through proper furnishing, accessorizing, and essentially, merchandising of the space," says Simon.

In addition, for those who do not intend to see their home, but wish to live better in the home they're in, BTSH will help to create the home of their dreams through a variety of services, from a simple redesign (utilizing their own furnishings and accent pieces) to full residential renovations, and everything in between.

"I love that every day is about finding solutions to a new problem or challenge," says Simon. "I get to meet a lot of new people, and it’s so fun to learn their stories, where they came from, the memories they’ve made, and what their next steps are. It’s like you get a continually growing extended family." 

BTSH is now a team with seven employees. "I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit, so when I had the opportunity after being laid off from my last corporate job, I jumped at the opportunity. It wasn’t about being my own boss, but more about having the ability to control the offerings that I provided to clients, in order to cater to their needs, with products and services that they actually want and need," says Simon.

Besides working, Simon enjoys boxing and being active; volunteering, namely with the MS Society and the K-W Humane Society.


What does your typical day look like?

Ha, there’s no such thing! Every project and client is unique, and there is no such thing as a typical day in our industry. Often, how you've planned your day, and how it actually goes, are completely different. It's a fast-paced industry, and we have to be able to react quickly to any changes that occur. That said, it's not uncommon for a typical day to include a home staging consultation or two, where we meet with homeowners to help them to determine what updates and repairs they should do before they list their home for sale, as well as how to arrange their furniture, and add decorative touches, in order to appeal to today’s buyers.

What is your background/experience/education?

I have a bachelor of mathematics degree from the University of Waterloo, but obviously I don’t do much in my day-to-day business with that. I returned to school in 2008 to complete my home stager training certification, and have continued to immerse myself in my field to gain as much real-world knowledge as possible. Our region, and the local real estate market, are continually changing, and I make every effort to keep informed of trends, styles, buyer behaviours, and other factors that contribute to my client’s success. We have worked with hundreds of home owners, providing a variety of home services – there isn’t much that we haven’t done and can’t do! I combine creativity with logic – I take the best of what I have learned over the years, and apply it every day.

What do you want people in Waterloo Region to know about you or your business?

Our home staging clients often tell us how much they love their home when we’re done our job, and how much they wish they had done it sooner. We’re not just a home staging company, but we offer full decorating, design and redesign services. Don’t wait until you’re selling your home to do all those things you’ve wanted to do to create a home you can love and enjoy. Regardless of the service you choose, it’s important to us to learn how you live in your home so that we can be sure to incorporate style and function to meet your everyday needs.

What do you wish you knew (but didn’t) when you started your business?

To embrace failure! It’s not to say that I aim to fail, but I’m certainly not afraid to make mistakes, it’s my mistakes that have taught me more than anything else, and have led to my success

What advice do you have for other entrepreneurs in Waterloo Region?

Waterloo Region is such a wonderful community with a strong local focus. It’s important to build relationships with other local businesses, business owners, and community members. Once you have that, all it takes is a dedication to your craft, top-quality product/service, and drive for success!
