The Tyrone Matheson Group has been operating in Waterloo Region for over four years. They provide services to help business owners develop, communicate, and execute on strategies that contribute to increased business profits and valuation. A large part of what they do is implementing systems and processes around core business areas – net results are a business that is less dependent on the owner, however, fully empowered by an engaged, culture-driven team.

Tyrone, Cheif Strategy Officer, says the best part of his job is his close connections with his clients. "There is great satisfaction in being able to help business owners to get out of the business and to work on building something that should be designed to bring value to generations," he said.

Tyrone wants the community to know that they are there to help. "We offer a unique, business hand-holding process that is proven and delivers real measurable results. Our process is not for everyone. The number one criteria for working with us – you must be open and willing to change your thinking," he said. "Our business model is not for everyone – we prefer to work with business owners and franchisees with 5-50 employees. It’s not to say that we won’t work with you if you have less than 5 or more than 50, in the end, it’s about the right fit."

Outside of work, Tryone says he enjoys his growing family, traveling, photography, and reading.  He also enjoys playing the tenor and soprano saxophone, most often doing so in his church orchestra.  He's also a Rotary member, and enjoy the activities he participates in through them.


What sets you apart from your competitors?

Outside of my magnetic personality, my clients have told me over and over that they appreciate the fact that I’m personable and enjoy getting my hands dirty in their business. Consultants tell, coaches ask, we tell, ask, and do whatever he can to help get the job done.

What made you want to start your own business?

The desire to start my own business was a result of some soul searching.  I came to the realization that the only person responsible for my destiny is me, so why not control it?  

After working with many business owners, I started to see that a lot of them loved being a technician, but didn’t enjoy creating the systems and processes that strengthen their business, and had trouble planning forward. Identifying this gap helped me to create a business model that is extremely unique, and has resulted in over 230% revenue growth in 18 months (and on track in the next 12 months to double). Needless to say, the business is growing and with the growth comes welcomed challenges and plenty more opportunities.

What does your typical day look like?

My day starts at 8:30 a.m. after my son is dropped off at school. I have two time slots per day for meeting with people – 10 a.m. or 1 p.m.  This allows me enough time to prepare and travel between appointments while providing ample time for after school duties.

What is your background/experience/education?

Outside of the school of hard-knocks and lots of reading, I have a BA from Laurier – English with a minor in Philosophy.  I have over 15 years working with business owners and families in the financial services industry as both an investment advisor and financial planner.  I have my Teacher/Trainer of Adults Certificate from Humber College and a Leadership Certificate from Conestoga College.  I’ve been fortunate to have taught a post-graduate financial planning program and a small business program at Conestoga College. I also owned a leadership development franchise for 3.5 years, but left the franchise model to build and create my own brand.
What do you wish you knew (but didn’t) when you started your business?

I wish I had done a better job planning and setting both short and long-term goals to meet objectives.  I spent so much time tweaking the big picture, but forgot that it’s the little things that you do now that will help you to achieve the bigger things in the future.

What advice do you have for other entrepreneurs in Waterloo Region?  

When creating a business, the more people that you can share your story with and get involved in your journey, the easier it will be to scale and stay on track. Too many times we think we can do everything on our own and fail to realize that we should focus on what we do the best and get help for the rest.
